How did you get started in the swimwear business?
I went to design school at Otis School of Art and Design and later was recruited to work at a swimwear brand that made product for Victoria’s Secret.
How did you choose your brand’s name?
My brand name is the nickname my father gave me (Red) and my last name Carter. It was an easy choice for me because that is what my friends and family call me every day.
3 words to describe your brand
Sexy, Comfortable, Fashion
What was the inspiration for your Resort 2017 collection?
This season was inspired by Cuba, bright colors, and sunlit art deco feelings of nostalgia.
What should customers expect to see in your Resort 2017 collection?
Lots of amazing new shapes, high necks, and sophisticated colors. Placement prints that accentuate the curves and lots of sexy cutouts. Crochet details with insets, and AMAZING cover ups.
What swimwear trend do you think will be big in 2017?
A return to special items that have lots of details and quality. High necks will continue to be a trend, as well as great one pieces that fit. Colors will be brighter and bolder and we will see a return to handcrafted trims and details.
If you weren’t designing swimwear, what would you be doing?
I would probably be a fine artist or a movie actor.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I like to wake up early, and work out… head to my design studio and meet with my team. We typically brainstorm new trends and discuss how they would relate to the collection, sketch up illustrations of ideas. Usually there is a fitting or two during the day and then a meeting with store buyers. After that, a night out on the town with friends or business associates before a good night’s rest. There is NEVER a downtime as a designer.
If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?
I would love to travel to the Maldives and stay in a hut on the water.
What’s in your beach bag?
SUNSCREEN, A pair of Warby Parker sunglasses, The latest issue of Vanity Fair, The book “Walk Through Walls” by Marina Abramovic, A pair of Haviana’s flip flops, A Missoni towel, and I am listening to Nina Simone’s greatest collection.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to begin his/her own swimwear line?
Work for someone else before you start your own brand. Knowledge is power, and watching someone else make mistakes is the best way to learn the business without costing you a penny. Ask questions, meet people and network and always look for new ideas that you can call your own.
Where do you see your line in 5 years?
I see Red Carter as a resort lifestyle brand that combines all items needed to go on vacation. From bags to bikinis.
