1)How did you get started in the swimwear business
I am originally from Beverly Hills, CA. But at the age of 12, I moved to Punta de Mita & Vallarta.
I grew up in the ocean & in a bikini, channeling so much creativity from a free lifestyle that embodied something so rustic & in the elements. Swimwear to me was my most important piece of clothing, representing so much. I combined my influences from both world I grew up in to create the line.
2)How did you choose your brand’s name?
This is actually a difficult question. HAHA. When I first had the idea to create my own line, I put so much emphasis on not naming it after myself. I did not want it to be about me not about me in any way, as that was not what the brand was about . There were an array of reasons . In the very beginning, I even hired a name specialist that analyzed etymology and the meaning of words to help me come up with something and a logo. But it didn’t feel right or natural. For about a year and a half, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to call it. I knew that in time, through the creative process, the right name would come, that it would speak to me through the creation of the line, as it gained life. I ended up finding that SKYLER SWIMWEAR was the right fit and the only name that spoke to me & sounded right, so I went with it.
3) 3 words to describe your brand
“ A BLANK CANVAS ”
4)What was the inspiration for your 2019 collection?
Essentials, minimalism. I wanted to fill the niche of what I was always looking for in a suit. The concept behind ENERGY was to create a collection of essentials, five tops and five bottoms: key pieces every every girl/ woman should have in her wardrobe. My main focus was to design suits of high-end, quality, fabrics & perfect fit. In my mind, ENERGY allows you to handpick your essentials. To mix and match all styles, to find what fits/suits one best. Released in black, white & cherry red ( my favorite accent color for the season that looks sexy on any skin tone ).
Each bikini from ENERGY is a blank canvas.
It allows you to channel your own style & energy. Building block for expression.
In my eyes, SKYLER SWIMWEAR is a collection of style and influence from both a tropical and concrete jungle. My two parallel sources of inspiration. this is my influence , the accent I add to all suits. ENERGY’S minimalism allows one to pull from both
I think the first season is always a discovery process. It’s building the foundation for the rest of the brand. Identifying the direction you wish to take & what it is you want to communicate through the brand- what it will evolve into. Finding what it means & represents through the creative process.
You learn so much over a long journey of trial and error, putting every little piece of together and then taking it all apart again- to make it even better. Perfecting all the little details. To attempt creating the perfect bikini – SKYLER SWIMWEAR foundation was built.
5)If you weren’t designing swimwear, what would you be doing?
Making music. I grew up going out & dancing so i’ve been really immersed in all types of music from a young age – mostly Latin though to be specific. If I wasn’t designing swimwear, I would be focused on singing and putting something out- my truelove & first passion.
Also, I’d be full time in business school ( i am a part time student, so I can balance work ) for sure.
6)What does a typical day look like for you?
As of right now, I work pretty much every aspect of my business, so it’s a lot. I’ve been home for the last month (in Punta De Mita), after having my first two pop up boutiques with @puntamita’s Pacifico & Kupuri. There is one beach I go to a lot by myself in Mita. It’s a beach club actually, but no one has really been there lately since it’s low season now. Super clean, clear ocean, white sand. No one around. I have had conference calls laying in the sand with my computer no joke. (HAHA) Can you imagine? : “The office” It’s perfect, a direct channel of inspiration and energy. I can’t really work in a traditional way, so it’s great . No way to describe it, feels out of a dream.
7) If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?
There is an endless list of places, all so different from each other. Where I want to travel depends really depends so much on what i’m feeling. Usually it’s somewhere tropical. A deserted island. More places within Mexico .I am really into morocco right now. The desert & dunes. It’s early summer now which makes me think of Monaco & other places in The Mediterranean. That’s where i’d want to be right now.
8)Where do you see your line in 5 years?
I plan to grow and evolve in so many ways, expanding the line with consistency
I have such a clear idea of what SEASON II is going to be, The feeling it will evoke, what it represents. I already have so much planned out. I think I may even be more excited than when I first started in the very beginning . I plan to really take the line to the next level. Who knows what will come after that, even the sky isn’t the limit, it goes much further than that, there are endless possibilities.
